Land is presenting a multi year site-specific work with artist lauren halsey, entitled sister dreamer, in south central Los Angeles. In preparation for the forthcoming presentation, land worked with the artist to identify and lease a site for the work, assemble the project team, and do research and development for construction, production, and fabrication.
Gatherings is an ongoing exhibition series that reimagines how knowledge is held and shared in service of communal forms of wellbeing. Following the present calls to reimagine civic space and ways of gathering, artists who weld ritual, myth, ancestral knowledge, and/or communal practices to navigate and reimagine the world. Gatherings was birthed from the Los Angeles state historic park, known colloquially as the "cradle of la" for its origins of the zanja madre, the mother ditch which supplied water and early infrastructure enabling the development of Los Angeles. Gatherings is presented as a series of public installations, performances, collaborations, and offerings, the evolving nature reflective of the organic ways in which constellations of care are formed. Installations and performances by chris emile, maria maea, and adee roberson were presented in fy23.
From february 13 - 10, land presented land paul mccarthy's ws white snow, the artist's largest single work presented in the us, originally exhibited at the park avenue armory (new york) in 2013. Ws white snow has been hidden in plain sight for the past decade: an 8,800-square-foot artificial forest and a faithful replica of the artist's family home have stood fully installed in a warehouse in east la. The accompanying 7 hour four-channel video projection, edited by damon mccarthy and taken from 350 hours of recorded video from the 30 days of performance was projected alongside the installation. This was the first and possibly only time audiences in Los Angeles were be able to experience the work in situ, with the future of the work uncertain.
Trulee hall on february 19, 2023 land presented a live screening and performance of ladies' lair lake at redcat in partnership with outfest platinum. The film was accompanied by a live performance of the film's score with an orchestra and vocalists. Ladies' lair lake narrates a creation myth that begins not with man but with woman, and explores themes of disobedience and loss of innocence; the clash between patriarchal religion and matriarchal goddess worship; the complexities and loss of autonomy that accompany motherhood; and the interplay of free will and fate, of human desire and divine intervention. Soundscapes is land's programming series dedicated to experimental music and sound-based practices. In fy23 we presented new works by teira, lani trock, justen leroy, and soltera, at sites throughout Los Angeles that responded to the artist's environment. Justen leroy - land supported a multiyear collaboration with artist justen leroy, that encompassed community workshops, sound programming and commissions, a video installation in partnership with caam and art + practice, and culminating with a multidimensional performance program in fall 2023. Yasmine diaz. One june 3, 2023 land opened a group exhibition entitled for the sake of dancing in the street, originated by artist yasmine nasser diaz and presented in partnership with oxy arts. The exhibition featured works by lastesis, moreshin allehyari, in conversation with works by ava ansari, geochicas, and archival materials compiled by caitlin abadir-mullally and raja bella hicks. For the sake of dancing in the street was a group exhibition celebrating the interconnectedness of feminist and queer resistance. Collectively the work documents and amplifies individual acts of resistance as well as historical and ongoing global feminist protest movements, including the current uprisings in irancreating connections between these movements across space and time. Archival materials, videos, zines and posters trace these connections and create new reverberating calls to action. Central to the exhibition is a focus on dance as a liberatory practice, using disruption, joy and irreverence as critical tactics. N2existence is a solution-based movement that enables people to use their passions to manifest new realities of freedom, founded by artist aaron fowler in 2020. N2existence: the oasis was presented by land with fowler in partnership with residency gallery in inglewood as an interactive creative space in which artists, makers, technologists, activists, and community organizers can come together to share their work, learn, access expensive technologies, engage in deep discussion, and explore their own creative visions. The oasis is the result of a residency facilitated by land in the residency space in summer 2021, where fowler met inglewood-based peer specialist divinity warmsley and continued his work with activist and filmmaker sultan sharrief. Over the past year, they have collectively envisioned what is missing in the creative communities in south la. Despite an influx of new residents and a multitude of creative apps for connecting, there are no accessible spaces open in the evening, where community members can imagine, engage, and manifest their creative visions leading to real impact. The oasis is in essence a prototype that can be scaled in future iterations, including fowler's dream of an n2existence town-hub constructed out of shipping containers. Felix quintana fantasma paraiso / phantom paradise is a multisite exhibition by artist felix quintana commissioned and presented by land. Quintana's mixed-media works form an ephemeral portrait of Los Angeles by placing his signature portrait and landscape photography directly in the locations that they represent. His billboards, wheatpaste posters, vinyl banners, and signs uplift the beauty of the day-to-day routines and the emblems of diasporic communities of Los Angeles. Quintana encourages a slowing-down and flattening of the past and present through his unique cyanotype style of combining photography, print-making, collage and mixed-media. Presented in partnership with art Division in macarthur park and plaza mexico in lynwood.compass rose compass rose is an expansive project initiated by artist debra scacco connecting contemporary oral histories with historic cartography to better understand the shape of Los angles. The project draws a direct line from past to present, using the sanborn fire insurance indexes to discuss the long-standing impacts of urban planning policies that implement highways as tools for segregation. Carla frieze party on february 14, 2023 land presented an evening of performance featuring dj kita and dizzy fae, along with valentines by artist alake shilling, to celebrate carla's issue 31 launch and la's artist community on the occasion of the frieze art fair.
