Lyric Opera of the North

the 2022-23 fiscal year for Lyric Opera of the North (loon) saw the return of live performances for the season. In october, loon presented "as one", an Opera about becoming a woman, with the starring role shared by a baritone and a mezzo-soprano. Transgender artists were featured in the cast, on the podium, and as hosts for the q&a following each performance. Loon participated again in the decameron Opera coalition of "doc the halls". Loon's singers provided the introduction to each company's song. Loon commissioned a piece titled "little spirit moon at solstice". the music was composed by Minnesota composer daniel nass, lyrics by local writer linda legarde grover, and sung by elizabeth jaakola, a local anishinaabe singer. the winter production featured loon's new cor ensemble in a concert of solos, ensembles, and choral music. the little loon program was able to return to elementary schools with a performance of Opera for the young's adaptation of "the pirates of penzance." Little loon visited 19 schools in the duluth-superior area and northern Minnesota. In june, loon presented a fully staged performance of "cavalleria rusticana". There were two fundraisers. the valentine's day soire, loon's largest fundraiser, returned in february and the summer sparkler was held outdoors in august.
