Program areas at Machik
Civic engagement program--machik continued to grow public education to a broad community of tibetans, americans and global citizens about the vital importance of engagement for tibet through a number of innovative initiatives such as Machik weekend, and Machik commencement. The 17th annual Machik weekend was well-attended with approximately 270 people attending. The participants learned more about social innovation and engagement for tibet, and building greater understanding among participants. The Machik commencement celebration once again convened tibetans and supporters from around the world for a conversation about the value and impact of education. The Machik community screening program continued to engage audiences about tibetan language resilience and shared key viewpoints through stories told through tibetan standpoints.
Social innovation program--machik first innovated the effort to specifically identify and support social innovators in tibet. We continued to create platforms for tibetan innovators to connect to global communities for their stories and visions which in turn generate greater learning and understanding of tibetan lives and socio-cultural realities today. In 2023, we continued to build bridges of understanding by featuring speakers from tibet at the 17th Machik weekend.
Governance program--we continued to partner with george Washington university on governance as it relates to research, education and social innovation in tibet as this affects our programs with the tibet govlab. This program continued research, workshops, and seminars to create more understanding of tibetan innovation, community needs and possible ways forward.
Gender equity program--machik was founded on a core commitment to promoting education for tibetans including girls and women and capacity building and empowerment. In our programs, we prioritize women's access to opportunities. This year we also organized mammogram clinic in the rural tibetan refugees settlements in india, working with local doctors to reach rural women who have never had access to mammograms before.
