Program areas at Magnolia Rose Cottage
In 2023 we responded to five trafficking situations, serving seven survivors. We also referred around ten other situations to appropriate agencies and organizations. These numbers are down from the past two years, but the needs are increasing. We rent hotels to do this work, and during 2023 we rented and maintained an apartment for survivors.
We intend to buy or build a safe house suitable for this work, and during 2023 we set aside 60,000 for this purpose. It is very important that we have a private location with appropriate facilities for working with trafficking survivors.
We opened a store in 2023 to provide a public face for our work. The store provides funding for our rescue work, a means to educate the public about human trafficking in Virginia, an opportunity for volunteers to get involved, and financial opportunities for trafficking survivors and other abuse survivors. Almost all of the goods we sell are produced by trafficking survivors, small women-owned businesses, or come from fair trade sources. We also lease space to recovering women with small businesses to sell products they produce. This store is run 100% by volunteers.
