Program areas at Maryland Patient Safety Center

Maternal health equity - the organization with the help of an advisory group comprised of local experts in the fields of maternal health, emcrgency medcine, family practice, racial bias and health care inequities,creates educational tools for non-obstetric providers to address the substantial disparity in the maternal morbidity rate for black mothers in Maryland.
Maternal mortality review - the organization provides administration for the maternal mortality review program which includes the request for records, abstraction of data, preparation of case reviews, entry of data into the database, and coordination of mmr meetings. The organization also convenes and attends an annual maternal mortality summit to share knowledge and best practices.
Annual Patient Safety conference - the annual Patient Safety conference brings together over 1,200 healthcare professionals and nationally recognized speakers and presenters to learn and exchange best practices related to current issues surrounding Patient Safety.
Clean collaborative - this is an initiative for Maryland hospitals, long term care facilities, and ambulatory care centers to improve facility cleanlinesss as a means of reducing healthcare associated infections.
Medication Safety initiative - the organization conducts an annual conference and bi-annual survey to assess the status of the medication Safety efforts underway, identify best practices and share this information among hospitals.
Opioid misuse - statewide effort to proactively inform consumers about the risks of opioid use; what questions to ask their doctor, what are the alternative pain management techniques, and how to properly store and dispose of unused prescriptions.
Patient Safety certification - the Patient Safety certification program is a comprehensive, proactive effort that will assess, identify and resolve Patient Safety issues. The program will examine these issues through an organizational lens, incorporating a combination of classroom education, practical applications and coaching/mentoring. Positive psychology principles will be applied as the performance improvement model - focusing on what that organization does right as a method of resolving and sustaining success with the identified issues. The program will empower and educate psos as a focal point for affecting cultural change within the entire organization.
Diagnosis errors - focusing on stroke and heart attack diagnoses, this initiative will attempt to determine the scope and extent of misdiagnosis. The progression from this study will then be used to examine causation and corresponding solutions.
Perinatal/neonatal - the organization's mission regarding perinatal is to create units that deliver care safely and reliably with zero preventable adverse outcomes. Additional concentrations include improving teamwork and communication through the implementation of team behaviors, including the family, into neonatal care.
Maryland maternal health innovation program - this program is an effort to work with mhip investigators to design quality improvement trainings and facilitation supports for frontline staff in birthing hospitals in Maryland.
Patient family advisory council for quality (pfacq) - this program has been designed to help organizations take their Patient and family engagement strategies to the next level with a focus on improving outcomes, reducing costs, promoting transparency and reinforcing staff joy and meaning in healthcare work.
Caring for the caregiver - this program is based on the johns hopkins hospital peer support program for healthcare providers known as the resilience in stressful events or rise program. A "train the trainer" model with support and coaching from the rise staff, this program provides timely support to healthcare employees who encounter stressful, patient-related events related to the "second victim" situation.
Adverse event reporting - the organization partners with healthcare providers in Maryland to collect and analyze data on adverse events and near misses. The data are used to explore patterns and trends related to Patient Safety.
Education - the organization offers several education programs as part of a comprehensive set of activities designed to help healthcare providers develop the skills and behaviors necessary to make Maryland the safest state in the nation for receiving Patient care.
Other - includes a wide range of consulting and advisory services on various topics.
