Program areas at Matthew Shepard Foundation
Outreach: providing outreach to the public in a variety of formats including 22 dei focused educational presentations in high schools, universities, workplaces and community organizations by judy Shepard, board members and staff; remote educational support to 66 productions of "the laramie project," providing sociological and historical context in addition to lending first-hand recollection of the events (community discussions & cast chats); outreach and training for law enforcement agencies and prosecutors on bias motivated crimes; 7 formal federal training sessions, reaching 1,219 attendees from state and local justice departments across the country; media outreach on civil rights, equality legislation, lgbtq+ youth safety, and other topics related to sexual orientation and gender identity.
Advocacy: activities promoting legal, legislative, and social equity and equality for lgbtq+ people, to include protection from bias motivated crimes, employment and education discrimination, and access to public accommodations. Engagement in efforts to encourage policy decisions throughout the country, specifically gay and trans panic defense bans and conversion therapy bans. Actions conducted through a variety of communication methods, media appearances, written testimonies, and partnerships with allied organizations.
Resources: a collection of educational resources and content focused on three primary areas: lgbtq+ youth, hate crime prevention, and artistic legacy works inspired by matt's story. Educational content provided via social media to an average of over 207,000 followers and via matthewshepard.org with an average of 20.892 unique visitors per month. A variety of content created by 18 youth bloggers for matthewsplace.com, an online community for lgbtq+ and allied youth. Posts reaching over 18,422 unique visitors annually, include access to youth focused resources, editorials from peers, and interviews with professionals and public figures on diversity and inclusion.
