Program areas at PIAA
Meetings & education: the Medical Professional Liability Association provides its members with a wide variety of knowledge-sharing opportunities and Professional education focused on the Medical Professional Liability (mpl) insurance industry. This includes both in-person and virtual learning programs that concentrate on special segments of the membership to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information. In 2022, the in-person programs included the Association's annual Medical Professional Liability conference, tri-annual international conference, as well as 11 educational workshops covering specific aspects of the mpl insurance business, including marketing, dental, claims, risk management, governance, finance, underwriting, defense strategies, and other general mpl insurance business operations. In addition, the Association hosted five webinars on various issues of importance to professionals in the mpl insurance sector.
Marketing and communications: the mpl Association produces inside Medical Liability online in fully digital format and covers content on the business of mpl insurance and trends in healthcare. The Association's website, www.mplassociation.org, offers data on Medical Liability claims and market analyses, as well as information on current industry concerns, such as patient safety, telemedicine, cyber, and hr/staffing. The Association also maintains a robust social media presence to connect with and promote the interests of its members.
Public policy: the mpl Association is an advocate for federal Medical Professional Liability reforms and speaks for its members on patient safety, regulatory and privacy legislation introduced in congress and/or considered by regulatory entities. The Association also tracks state legislation and assists members with state-level advocacy efforts, both legislative and regulatory, on matters ranging from tort reforms to cyber Liability and data privacy. Recent accomplishments include filing comment letters on behalf of our members on federal legislation, developing strategies to help defeat state legislation harmful to the mpl industry, and enhancing our tracking of state supreme court decisions related to Medical Liability.
