Program areas at Melanoma Know More
Melanoma Know More Prevention and Community Outreach: Melanoma Know More partnered with SwimSafe Pool Management to create a program to provide free sunscreen at area pools by deploying sponsored sunscreen dispensers. With this collaboration, free sunscreen dispensers were provided for nine area pools throughout the Greater Cincinnati Community. Using SPF 30 sunscreen is a sun-protective practice that can prevent the risk of skin cancer. Impact was estimated at 11,000 individuals supported. Melanoma Know More also supported some other education and prevention efforts with the life guards.
Melanoma Know More Education & Prevention: Melanoma Know More provided a booth, dispensers at the Western & Southern Tennis Open and a robot to provide free sunscreen and education on skin cancer prevention.
Free Monthly Skin Cancer Screening Clinics: On the second Saturday of every month from 10am - noon, a cancer screening clinic is scheduled and supported by dermatologists, nurses, and administrative staff, who volunteer their time to detect skin cancer, specifically melanoma. If one of the volunteer dermatologists notes a suspicious finding that could potentially be a melanoma, the patient is expedited within four weeks from the clinic date to a dermatologist for further evaluation and a possible biopsy. Melanoma Know More is the only organization in the US to provide such consistent screenings. In 2023, Melanoma Know More provided 10 free skin cancer screening clinics, 435 patients were screened during the year.
Melanoma Know More Community Outreach: Melanoma Know More partnered with 3CDC to support skin cancer prevention education for Workout on the Green at Washington Park and for Ziegler Park and added a new Court Street Plaza location. Impact was estimated at 15,000 individuals supported. Melanoma Know More also added a video shown at Fountain Square, Washington Park & Ziegler Park Cinema Events. A sunscreen dispenser was added to Court Street Plaza, and some other education and prevention efforts with schools and health fairs. For Patient Outreach, Melanoma Know More investigated and researched creating a program to help patients diagnosed with melanoma navigate their care options. It is hoped to implement this program by 2025.
