Program areas at Metairie Humane
Rescue dogs from kill shelters or accept owner surrenders and strays to keep them out of kill shelters, as space and financial limitations allow. We took in 241 dogs in 2022. We provide for the physical and emotional needs of the dogs we take in to prepare them for adoption. if they are not adoptable, they will remain with us for the rest of their natural lives, except if a Louisiana certified Veterinarian deems a dog is a significant danger to other dogs or to our volunteers with no hope of behavior modification, or the Veterinarian recommends a dog be put to sleep because it has a terminal condition and is suffering. As of 12/31/22, there were 18 adoptable dogs and 5 hospice dogs in house. A summary of medical care provided during 2022: 18 Major Medical cases (over $1000), 7 Minor Medical Cases (under $1000), 115 Spays, 106 Neuters, 108 heartworm tests, 25 heartworm treatments, 547 doses of heartworm and flea protection, microchipped 329 dogs, 215 full sets of shots, 180 sets of puppy shots, 96 rabies shots, 52 lepto shots and 925 deworming treatments.
Education and community outreach - We use our website and Facebook page to educate about the importance of 1) Spay and neuter programs to reduce pet over population; 2) Heartworm prevention to reduce the number of dogs that get infected and then owner surrendered because of the expensive treatments required to save the dog; 3) Microchipping animals to help them be returned to their owners if the pet is lost or stolen; 4) Cruelty and threats to animals and ways to avoid them, such as excessive heat or cold, hurricane preparedness and evacuation issues, toxic food and plants, and seasonal issues that occur around Easter, fireworks, Thanksgiving and Christmas. During 2022, we also sponsored a community microchip clinic and a separate community vaccination clinic that were open to open to the general public.
Adopt dogs to good, responsible families who will provide a safe and loving environment for the adopted dogs. We adopted out 238 dogs during 2022. We use Facebook, our website, free websites, such as RescueGroups.org and their access to many other websites to describe our adoptable dogs to potential adopters. In addition we host or participate in various adoption events.
