Program areas at Miami Freedom Project

Organizing & training engaging in regular 1-on-1 meetings with community leaders to identify shared interests and potential collaborations and bring them into closer alignment with grassroots efforts. Programming virtual and in-person panels and events around topics impacting our communities - specifically climate justice, economic justice, access to health care, immigration reform, and racial justice developing a base of young progressive Miami leaders by offering training and workshops on organizing and movement building. Providing media training for community and grassroots leaders whose voices will carry particular resonance in spanish and spanglish media. Identifying and developing new voices willing to draft an op-ed, submit a letter to the editor, or develop digital content around a relevant issue. Organizing workshops: our mobilize for Miami workshops help young progressive latinx Miami leaders build organizing capacity leading into early voting and define a path towards social change and public action. Leading up to the 2022 midterm elections, we held an art and organizing workshop with movimiento san isidro. Media trainings: in response to miami-dades political shift to the right, weve held multiple training sessions with grassroots and community leaders to identify and rapidly respond to disinformation in both spanish and english on social media, radio appearances, and traditional media outlets with a focus on developing skills and tools for debating. Spanish language speakers bureau: we held our first virtual media training with leaders of local grass-roots organizations in june 2022 in partnership with Florida watch. The goal was to find people who could respond quickly to false information in both spanish and english on social media, in radio interviews, and in traditional media, with a focus on developing debate skills and tools. To ensure that wed be able to plug in trainees to any available earned media opportunities, the initial (14) registrants were asked to join a speakers bureau of identified spokespeople. This was followed by a follow-up in-person training (disinformation, counter narratives, and rapid response). At the request of one of the participants, we also held an additional in-person training for cuban american women supporting democracy (cawsd), a non-partisan group of 20+ women dedicated to challenging disinformation. Participants receive weekly guidance in both spanish and english to help inform media appearances and address mis/disinformation (40+ issues to date). Each edition focuses on topics that monitoring reports have identified as areas of concern where an increased amount of mis/disinformation has been identified. We also include relevant articles and sample tweets to be shared. By providing this information, we have been able to not only counter but inoculate against disinformation. Since the fall of 2022, our speakers bureau has grown to include 70+ grassroots leaders from 30+ organizations generating television, radio, and print interviews throughout the last midterm election season. Our growing list coalition-led initiatives and partnerships public land for public good in order to ensure a competitive request for proposal (rfp) process that integrated the reports recommendations - including green space, community resource centers, and affordable housing - plpg held (2) town halls and a press conference with community members, business owners, and religious leaders before the city of Miami moved forward with the redevelopment of allapattah's 18-acre gsa lot in august 2022. Ffa's six country of origin work groups: colombia, cuba, dominican republic, mexico, puerto rico, and venezuela organized over 50 field events with over 1,000 attendees to increase voter turnout and participation.
