Program areas at Michigan Animal Health Foundation
The mahf board of trustees met in june and evaluated several excellent proposals. Trustees agreed to provide grants for the following research project:the 2023 mazunte project proposes to provide surgical and shelter medicine experience for six Michigan state university college of veterinary medicine veterinary students, three msucvm veterinary nursing students and two recent graduates from the veterinary college at the benito juarez autonomous university in oaxaca, mexico. Twofaculty members from msucvm will be joined by two veterinarians in private practice to provide trip coordination and teaching. The mahf grant will provide a stipend of $1,000 for each msu student to cover travel expenses and$1,000 to help cover car rental for the group. The students will also attend a seminar on marine veterinary medicine conducted by veterinarians dr. marcelino lopez-reyes and dr. adriana cortes-gomez at the national mexican turtle center in mazunte, oaxaca, mexico.this project will provide veterinary services for remote communities along the pacific coast of oaxaca, mexico.we will reduce the feral dog population in these communities by conducting a surgical sterilization campaign, which will decrease the canine predation of sea turtles, sea turtle hatchlings and sea turtle eggs in the critical nesting areas that are in close proximity to the villages that we visit.
The companion Animal fund was created to subsidize non-elective veterinary care for pets whose owners would otherwise be unable to afford it. Some of the groups most dependent on companion animals often experience difficulty in obtaining treatment in the case of unforeseen circumstances due to inadequate finances. Thus, mahf created the companion Animal fund to help pet owners who have income under the federal poverty level, are on medicaid or are on wic (women infants & children) get the necessary care for their beloved animals.
