Program areas at Migrant Equity Southeast
For Civic Engagement programming, Migrant Equity sent out employees and volunteers to inform the community of upcoming elections, voting locations and dates, and voting rights. Also, again during the subsequent run-off. All advertisements and information shared was in English and Spanish.
Migrant Equity helped local communities with Community Outreach. They set up meetings between the community and its leaders. Had multiple bilingual functions informing the community of the assistance they can receive from Migrant Equity or other non-profits.
The Migrant Equity Direct Assistance Program helped many immigrants and refugees in Georgia with rent or food assistance. Assistance with things like diapers, school supplies, and furniture was given to community members. Migrant Equity staff and volunteers also assisted with translations when needed and helped connect community members with medical, legal, and educational resources. They helped local immigrants file their DACA paperwork with the help of an immigration lawyer and paid the registration fee. Migrant Equity Southeast also had its first scholarship to offer DACA students.
Migrant Equity's Education Advocacy program involved advocating for language equity and improving programming for ESOL students in South Georgia. This involved reaching out to parents who do not speak English and helping them understand how to advocate for their students. They also spoke at multiple school board meetings to advocate for language equity in the local school district. Migrant Equity staff also assisted with school enrollment.
DACA and Immigration Assistance. Once a year, Migrant Equity has an event to help local immigrants renew and update their status. An immigration lawyer reviews all filings before being mailed off.
