Program areas at Military Retirees Club of Richmond
The achievements for the exempt purpose of operating a Club house to serve as a medium for friendship and comradery among retired members of the Armed Forces, without regard to national origin, creed, race, or color, were accomplished through the donations of time, service, and monetary contributions. The organization continued to make repairs to the facility, internally and externally. It honored members during birthday celebrations. The MRC planned programs to honor deceased members, attended funerals at their churches, participated in celebrations, displayed their pictures outside the building, and hung a tribute scroll of deceased members on its "Wall of Fame". The Club hosted its first Annual Fundraising Gala on April 15, 2023. LTG (retired) Darrell K. Williams, President of Hampton University, one of our State HBCUs, was keynote speaker. In attendance were Ms. Joyce Reed, Deputy Secretary of Administration, Dr. Angela Porter, Director of Suicide Prevention and Opioid Addiction Services and others.
Achievements for the exempt purpose to promote the membership, welfare and prosperity for civic and patriotic purposes were through the organizations civic action programs. Such events include a major donation of school supplies to students attending George Carver Elementary School in Richmond, VA., our adopted school. Supplies were purchased, packaged, and distributed to those needy students, as recognized by the school officials. Thanksgiving dinners were acquired and given to disadvantaged families. Once again, the MRC hosted its Annual Toys for Tots Childrens Christmas Party, where breakfast and lunch were provided to local underprivileged children. They were visited by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Books, toys, bikes, joy, and love were shared. Moreover, the children were amazed and in awe to personally tour the "Big Red Truck" thanks to the Richmond Fire Department.
Civic and humanitarian achievements were through donation of equipment, time, and the use of its facilities to other non-profit organizations, such as the Disabled American Veterans, to hold its monthly meetings. One of their heavily attended programs is the sessions on veterans' claims which are written and filed in addition to providing information about claims and updates on veteran's benefits.
