Program areas at Milwaukee Repertory Theater
The 2022/23 season brought Theater back to our stages as challenges remained as we continued to navigate through covid-19 pandemic. After successfully navigating the challenges associated with the pandemic, the board of trustees of Milwaukee rep unanimously approved plans to remain at its current location and remodel with an expanded complex with state-of-the-art theaters, abundant community gathering spaces, an education center to expand student programming, and modern audience amenities.the 2022/23 season was a robust season of development and production of new plays in our new play development program at Milwaukee rep. on our powerhouse stage, we produced the world premiere of catherine trieshmann's nativity variations, a play commissioned and workshopped through our npd program. Our stiemke studio season was focused exclusively on new works. In the fall, we produced the co-commissioned premiere of eleanor burgess's wife of a salesman (which also had significant development work, including an additional week of rehearsal and a development workshop). In the spring, we produced the world premiere of lloyd suh's the heart sellers (also commissioned and developed by Milwaukee rep's npd program). In addition, we workshopped two more commissioned works: run bambi run by gordon gano and eric simonson (which has since had a world premiere on our stages), and first gen by jon rua. We also attended several new play festivals both virtually and in person.
Milwaukee rep's education & engagement programs during 2022/2023 included a pre-professional emerging professional residency program for actors, directors, and educators, workshops and classes for adults and students and outreach programs to area schools, student matinees and rep immersion days, community dinner dialogues, and neighborhood programming partnerships. Additionally, we offered free programs for high school students including a professional training institute, next narrative monologue competition Milwaukee regionals, and a teen council leadership program. We served 149 schools and organizations with over 15,000 participants in our education & engagement programs.
