Program areas at Minorities in Shark Sciences
Diversifying Ocean Sciences:The purpose of the program is to provide folks with a stepping stone into marine science who are otherwise struggling to break into the field. Diversifying Ocean Sciences is a free, year-long hybrid program for people to hone their ocean science skills, build their network, and receive mentorship. Thirty participants will be accepted into the program. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in one of four concentrations (Estuary Science, Deep Sea Science, Coastal Science or Aquarium Science). The experience will culminate with a week long hands-on intensive in-person (on site) workshop and a week long shoreside (on site) or remote experience during summer 2024.
Research Summit: Attendees will have the opportunity to attend any SICB talks, symposiums, or workshops as well as attend the MISS research summit. During this summit, MISS members and Friends of MISS will have the opportunity to present their own research, network with scientists from many different disciplines, and join working groups to potentially receive funding for research SEED grants offered by MISS!
Eugenie Clark fellowship: A full-time paid training experience in shark research. Participants will receive mentorship from scientists from Havenworth Coastal Conservation, Chicago Zoological Society?s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, and Minorities in Shark Sciences and participate in on-vessel field-based research, receiving hands-on experience deploying gear, handling, identifying, tagging and releasing sharks, rays and bony fish, as well as collecting biological (morphological measurements, blood and tissue samples) and environmental (water quality) data. Additionally, participants will learn to design and deliver public outreach content on the biology, ecology and conservation concerns of local shark and ray species. Participants may also assist with processing biological samples, maintaining sampling gear and water quality monitoring equipment, and recording, entering, and analyzing data. Participants will also receive full financial support to attend the Joint Meeting of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists conference with the mentors in July.
