Program areas at Mission of Mercy
Medical/dental services and prescription medications provided at no cost to the sick, uninsured and under-insured poor, and homeless through health clinics staffed primarily by volunteer, licensed healthcare professionals. Between july 1, 2022 and june 30, 2023 we dispensed 44,387 prescriptions and had 21,930 patient visits at 13 clinic sites in 4 states. The organization receives substantial donated resources to support our patient care, including 1,052,667 of donated services from licensed healthcare professionals that provide the medical dental and ophthalmic services, 3,666,612 of medication and medical supplies, 1,929,667 of donated lab and diagnostic imaging services, use of donated facilities of 483,360.
In addition to direct healthcare services provided free to patients, the community connections program at our clinics connects patients with additional resources from other partner organizations, helping to promote health literacy, disease management and prevention education, nutrition and exercise. Covid-19 has restricted much face-to-face activities, but we continued to serve our patients needs as possible/practical. For example, activities during the year ended june 30, 2023 include: maryland/pennsylvania program -89,545 pounds of food (50% fresh fruit and vegetables, 50% healthy non- perishables) distributed to 700 families (3,156 individuals) -provided free covid-19 testing for patients -frederick county health department provided opioid abuse educaiton to patients and volunteers. Disapensed narcan to patients and volunteers upon successful completion of training -frederick health provided free on-site bone density testing -frederick health department provided on-site hiv testing Arizona program -partnered with albertsons/safeway pharmacies on public health campaigns related to flu prevention and covid-19 vaccines; -partnered with dignity health and albertsons safeway pharmacies to administer free flu vaccines to 523 patients at six clinic sites; -implemented comprehensive diabetes management program at four clinics, partnering with dignity health/st. Joseph's hospital and chandler regional/mercy gilbert medical centers, blue cross blue shield of Arizona, bhhs legacy foundation, gregory's fresh market, Arizona diabetes foundation and azcend (food bank and family support programs); -1,363 diabetes education, nutrition & fitness sessions provided for 437 patients. -1,995 bags of fresh produce distributed to Mission of Mercy patients. -28 patients enrolled in a blood pressure self-monitoring program funded by the american heart association, phoenix chapter. Texas program -opened the new dental clinic to provide free dental services to include x-rays, examinations, cleanings, fillings, and extractions. -secured new volunteer dentists, dental assistants, hygenists and nurse practitioners. -housed Texas a&m university in our medical center permanetly to provide onsite free medical care to patients to include a1c testing, diabetes management education classes, blood pressure management classes, nutrition classes, and cooking classes both in english and spanish. -increased the number of new patients through walk in procedures and increased volunteer physician hours. -partnered with the department of defense and community partners to implement "operation health & wellness" in our vision clinic to provide free exams and manufactured 300 new pair of glasses in our classroom.
