The rio grande valley is a medically underserved area. Access and transportation are continuing population needs. With many physicians coming out of medical school preferring employment rather than opening and managing their own office, there is a need to provide physician employment opportunities to encourage physicians to practice in the rio grande valley. In the state of Texas, only another physician or a legal entity with a board whose members are all physicians can legally employ a physician. The Mission Doctors Group can employ physicians and has opened clinics to provide residents with adequate access to physicians needed in the area. The organization opened the monarch clinic, a family practice/ob clinic in october 2022, employing two physicians.
