Program areas at Missouri River Bird Observatory
Mrbo conducts statewide surveys of birds and habitat characteristics in Missouri's most imperiled ecosystems, including prairies and reconstructed grasslands. In-field scientific research programs require employment of seasonal staff members and travel throughout the state. The results of these surveys inform land management strategies for public agencies and private landowners. Results are also shared with the general public and the data form a foundation for education and outreach programs
Mrbo conducts approximately 100 educational events that reach thousands of people each year. Programs are delivered for youth ages 6-18 and adults of all ages. Typical program topics are Bird identification, outdoor skills, conservation of birds and other wildlife, and service opportunties. Many events are one- or two- day programs, but mrbo also operates a two-week summer camp for youth ages 8-11, coordinates the Missouri young birders club, and hosts two festivals. In 2022 mrbo initiated a place-based learning facility called the arrow rock nature school that provides three- day experiential programs that complement students' in-classroom learning
