Program areas at Mobile Infirmary
Mobile Infirmary Association ("Mobile Infirmary") is licensed to operate 677 beds in the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center including 41 physical rehabilitation beds in the j.l. Bedsole/rotary rehabilitation hospital division, providing services necessary to deliver essential healthcare to the gulf coast community regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin, handicap, or age. During the fiscal year ended march 31, 2023, Mobile Infirmary serviced over 23,800 inpatients and provided over 275,000 outpatient services, delivered 812 babies, and performed almost 21,400 surgeries, including 300 open-heart cases. Mobile Infirmary operates a full-time level ii emergency department, open to all persons without regard for ability to pay, which treated over 62,700 people during the year. There are more than 650 physicians on the open Medical staff. (continued on schedule o) as the first hospital in the region to acquire the da vinci surgical system (one of the most precise and least invasive surgical treatments available), Mobile Infirmary has the most comprehensive robotic program along the gulf coast. The da vinci system puts the surgeon's hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform with 3d, high- definition vision and miniaturized, wristed instruments designed to help doctors take surgery beyond the limits of the human hand. The da vinci system enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. All surgeries are performed with a team of highly skilled and trained Medical professionals. In 2012, Infirmary health (an affiliated company) formed a volunteer committee to serve as a governing body for community involvement for the system, including Mobile Infirmary. This committee, known as ihelp, helps better manage staff and organizational resources by establishing a process to evaluate community needs and ensure our community projects are in line with our mission. The operation bounce-back program offers medically supervised exercise, education, and counseling to patients with cardiovascular diseases. The program assists them in leading productive and active lives. Operation bounce-back is one of the 10 largest cardiac rehabilitation programs in the united states and the first cardiac rehabilitation program in Alabama. Patients of all ages, and with many forms of heart disease, benefit from the program. Mobile Infirmary participates in the medicare and medicaid programs. In addition to that, Mobile Infirmary provides care to patients who meet the criteria of its financial assistance policy. The organization has expanded the federal poverty guidelines to afford charitable care to larger numbers of its patient population. Also, as a result of operating the only hospital based inpatient psychiatric unit in the community for adults, there is a significant amount of indigent care provided through this service. The total amount of charges foregone for healthcare services and supplies furnished under the organization's financial assistance policy for fiscal- year ending 2023 was over 20,838,000, including presumptively eligible patients. The debakey drug education program vehicle travels to schools throughout five counties of southwest Alabama to educate children about the dangers of illegal drug and substance abuse. In addition to visiting public, private and parochial schools, the vehicle is available for community events and other special programs. Recognized by the american hospital Association, the vehicle was the first of its kind in the country. Since it began in 1994, more than 210,000 students have participated in the program. Mobile Infirmary operates a charity pharmacy program that connects low income patients who qualify with free medications that they may not otherwise get filled due to the costs. During the fiscal year ending march 31, 2023, Mobile Infirmary provided over 76,000 in free medications. The Mobile Infirmary case management department also helps other patients register for industry sponsored programs that help patients get prescriptions filled at no or reduced cost. Mobile Infirmary operates the e.a. Roberts alzheimer's Center which is the first adult day Center in south Alabama designed specifically for people with alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The Center is a secure, 8,000-square-foot building which includes living room areas, a den, a kitchen, rest areas, enclosed courtyards with fountains, screened porches, and a large fenced yard complete with a walking path and putting green. Patients receive a variety of therapies to improve their cognitive abilities and physical wellbeing. Additionally, the e. a. roberts alzheimer's Center provides services to caregivers including an alzheimer's support group that meets regularly. The Center hosts community resource experts to assist client's families with issues like financial planning, health education and stress management. These services are provided at no charge to the community. With the goal of bringing awareness to american heart month and heart disease, Infirmary health participated in the american heart Association's annual Mobile county heart walk in november 2022. Operation bounce-back patients also participated in the walk. Additionally, through Infirmary health's 10,000 sponsorship to aha, Mobile Infirmary donated cpr training kits to the boys & girls club of south Alabama. The kits provide hands-on learning experiences and everything needed to train 10 students at once in cpr. In february 2023, Infirmary health raised awareness for heart month. In addition to publishing educational information across its website and social media channels, Infirmary health hosted its annual free heart screenings titled "go red gulf coast." Each of the Infirmary fitness centers hosted a screening in partnership with the local fox affiliate, and more than 200 participants received free blood pressure and glucose level checks. Infirmary health staff each volunteered three hours the day of the event to conduct the checks. Additionally, in Mobile, operation bounce-back and Infirmary health's stroke coordinators provided free blood pressure checks at the city's go red event. The Mobile mayor declared friday, february 3, 2023 as wear red day and thanked Infirmary health staff for their work at the event. May marks stroke awareness month, and to celebrate, Mobile Infirmary's stroke team arranged for several community outreach efforts. These included a coloring contest for local elementary-aged students, which included a free coloring book featuring befast (an acronym to recognize the symptoms of stroke). More than 150 children participated in the contest. Additionally, as the stroke program at Mobile Infirmary continues to grow, the stroke coordinators were active in providing community outreach education throughout fy23. The coordinators attended 13 events throughout the year and provided stroke education to nearly 1,700 students and community members. Infirmary health supports its local american cancer society (acs) chapter with numerous fundraisers and events through volunteer, in-kind, and financial contributions such as making strides against breast cancer, chili cook-off, pink pearls support group, and numerous other acs events throughout the year. In october 2022, Infirmary health participated as the survivor sponsor in acs's annual making strides against breast cancer walk. In addition to participating in the walk, Infirmary health employees purchased t-shirts, honor flags for their loved ones, and buttons. The fundraising efforts generated 2,500 for acs. In march 2023, Infirmary health raised money for acs's colon cancer awareness event, chili cook off. Each hospital sold t-shirts and tickets to the event. In total, 650 shirts were sold, and 2,390 was given back to acs. Infirmary health employees not only have a team each year for the making strides against breast cancer walk and the chili cook off, but employees also serve on the planning committee for the event. Infirmary health serves as a flagship sponsor for the chili cook off event that had more than 8,000 participants and is the survivor sponsor for the breast cancer walk that has nearly 4,000 walkers. Infirmary health and Infirmary cancer care rolled out its Mobile cancer screening unit in february 2019. The Mobile screening unit helps address the need for access to care in rural communities. In fy2023, the unit traveled to many outlying areas of Mobile county, including tillman's corner, eight mile, grove hill and others. In total, the unit traveled to more than 20 events and provided free screening and education to nearly 1,900 individuals. Prostate cancer awareness month falls each september, and in 2022, Infirmary cancer care brought back free prostate psa screenings for the community.
