Program areas at Mother and Child Alliance
Perinatal hiv enhanced case management, with crucial support from afc and the Illinois department of public health, provided services to approx 100 women in 2022. Maca services are designed to provide a high level of support to women living with hiv who are newly diagnosed, living with hiv and pregnant or recently delivered women navigating the complex healthcare system that does not easily address the intricate medical and healthcare needs of women living with hiv and their families. The services also address the co-morbid conditions that complicate childbearing including addiction, mental illness, homelessness, community and domestic violence, and other sexually transmitted infections.
Other program services include maca participation in a national stakeholder group advising the cdc on perinatal hiv transmission prevention in the united states, sponsorship of creative writing workshops and provision of supplies, refurbished computers and support for education and training for clients.
The 24/7 hotline received 206 calls in 2022, a slight decrease from 2021 when there were 208 calls. The hotline served 80 pregnant people with hiv in 2022 and 35 pregnant people with false positive hiv results. Four people with confirmed positive hiv rapid tests were reported to the hotline, all previously diagnosed with hiv. Among pregnant persons with hiv reported to the hotline, there were four live births to this group. The hotline is not aware of any cases of perintatal hiv transmission diagnosed in 2022. Perinatal surveillance activities in the last six months of 2022 included work to obtain monthly hospital reports on aggregate hiv testing, infant status ascertainment and to begin work on chart abstraction for fetal infant mortality reviews for hiv and congenital syphilis.
