Program areas at Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound
Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound received a national historical records and publications commission grant in 2018 entitled "visualizing history in the pacific northwest: saving our magnetic media." The grant enables us to digitize and make accessible analog and digital video. Specifically, the seattle channel collection at seattle municipal archives, videotaped oral histories held at seattle public library, and university of Washington libraries ethnomusicology archives tapes. In 2020, roughly 500 tapes were digitized. Access copies were made available at internet archive, and there were free twice monthly virtual screenings over the course of most of 2020 at northwest film forum, which featured the content digitized.
Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound provided services that were not connected to our grants from neh and nhprc. University of Washington libraries ethnomusicology archives is a partner on our nhprc grants, but Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound also provided digitizing services for the ethnomusicology archives separate from that, digitizing 68 tapes in 2020. Our largest client in 2020 was chihuly studios archives. Mipops digitized 356 tapes for them in 2020. Our other large non-grant clients were the children's music festival in issaquah and chelan county public utilities district.
Moving Image Preservation of Puget Sound received a national endowment for the arts grant in 2019 entitled "dv rescue." It entails the development of procedures and tools designed for the Preservation of digital video (dv) recordings, a highly fragile format used widely in the mid-1990s through 2000s, documenting local heritage, oral histories, arts and ethnographic performances and home movies. 2020 focused specifically on open source software to facilitate the most complete and accurate transfer of dv video from tapes to files.. Feedback and testing come from collaborators on the grant, which include smithsonian's national museum of african american history, carnegie hall archives, new york public library, and bay area video coalition among others. 2020 saw the initial version of dv rescue tools, including deck control and ability to capture dv data from tape to dv file.
