Program areas at Museums of Old York
Historic buildings and grounds - the historic buildings, properties and landscapes that oyhs owns or maintains, together are its single greatest program element that serves the public. In calendar year 2023, Old York opened to the public its new research center at beech ridge. The center houses both object and archival collections, and has a large public reading room where researchers can access by appointment a wide range of materials.
Exhibitions - the remick gallery's best of York exhibition featured new interpretation and objects added as a result of ongoing research into the early furniture makers of southern Maine. 18th century pieces formerly attributed to portsmouth, new hampshire and the piscataqua region, were found to have been made in York and kittery. The marshall store gallery continued exhibitions of contemporary art in 2023.
Education and programs - York living history, the oyhs Historical immersion experience for all fifth graders in the York public schools, once again welcomed students in 2023. Our historic buildings were open to the public and children 18 and under were given free admission. Other public programs such as the halloween lighting of the pumpkins, yuletide activities, and free zoom lectures rounded out the year.
