Program areas at My Connect Community
Impacting at-risk students - We serve at-risk youth in the Gulfton/Sharpstown area by integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) and behavioral health in schools to enhance the well-being of vulnerable adolescents. Our work focuses on preventing and early intervention of behavioral and mental health disorders through school-wide SEL programs, behavioral health supports, and collaboration. Through grants, we transform classrooms and schools into supportive communities where young people can be confident, compassionate, and empowered to succeed in school and life.
Communities of Care - Through grants, we make efforts to transform the environments where people live, learn, work, play, and pray, bringing a population health approach to support community resilience, mental health, and well-being with a focus on children and youth of color and their families.
Job Creation - Live and Work in the Gulfton/Sharpstown area. In 2020, Connect launched a program mobilizing the talents of local seamstresses and tailors to make masks to sell to the public during the COVID-19 pandemic. Allowing Gulfton area residents to earn extra income while helping protect all of Houston. Connect now runs a 9-month training program for industrial sewing with ESL, digital literacy, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. In addition, Connect has HTX Sewn Goods, which is a white-label production arm of Connect, providing prototyping and labor for designers/inventors seeking to have their products fabricated in Houston.
Affordable Housing - We strive to create affordable housing within the Gulton/Sharpstown neighborhood so families can remain in the area and new families migrate to the area.
Community Health & Well-being: We serve our neighborhood by bringing together the residents, local leaders, and vital components necessary for a holistic, healthy community that includes health, after-school, and recreation programs services.
