Program areas at 9 / 11 Day

9/11 Day began the september 11 national Day of service and remembrance in 2002 to rekindle the remarkable spirit of unity and service that arose in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy. The observance is now the nation's largest annual Day of charitable engagement, with tens of millions of americans participating each september. In 2023, by packing nutritious, non-perishable meals for families in need, more than 20,000 meal pack volunteers in 21 cities across the united states honored those lost, injured and sickened from the attacks, as well as those who rose in service after the tragedy. Together, we provided more than 6.7 million healthy, non-perishable meals to local food banks in new york city, atlanta, boston, cincinnati, chicago, cleveland, columbus, dallas, denver, detroit, houston, los angeles, minneapolis, nashville, philadelphia, phoenix, san jose, seattle, st. louis, tampa, and Washington, d.c., for families and individuals facing food insecurity in these communities. Leading up to the 25th anniversary of the september 11 attacks in 2026, 9/11 Day will expand to additional cities nationwide.. with the growth of our education programs and the continuation of our meal packs, we aim to keep the nation's promise to "never forget."
Cooperative agreement aims to provide significant opportunities to elevate the americorps identity as a principal sponsor of key 9/11 Day programs through co-branding, particularly with initiatives such as the meal packs for 9/11 Day, the campus meal pack programs, and our expanding youth engagement programs. Additionally, it aims to leverage 9/11 Day programs to assist in recruiting members for americorps, vista, and senior corps where possible. Efforts should also focus on increasing overall volunteerism in observance of the federally recognized september 11 national Day of service and remembrance. Furthermore, federal cooperative agreement funding will be utilized to expand key 9/11 Day programs on a national scale. Americorps members will be more actively engaged in supporting and participating in 9/11 Day volunteer service activities as part of their training, and in other ways where their interests align with 9/11 Day initiatives.
9/11 Day works in close collaboration with colleges, universities, student groups, faculty and campus staff across the nation to organize on-campus, volunteer service events in observance of the september 11 national Day of service and remembrance. At these events, student-volunteers participate in packing nutritious, non-perishable meals for distribution to local food banks and college pantries at their discretion. In 2023, nearly 4,000 volunteers from 16 colleges and universities, across 11 campuses, packed nearly 1 million meals for those in their communities facing hunger.
