Program areas at My Sister's Place of Gainesville
Homeless shelter - My Sister's Place helps restore hope to single women and children who are experiencing homelessness by providing a nurturing shelter program that meets basic needs, provides essential resources, and offers wraparound services that help increase independence and move towards self- sufficiency. We provide encouragement, spiritual enrichment, and connection with the applicable community resources such as childcare services, housing assistance programs, medical care providers, and mental health services. During 2023, we served 52 women and children in our shelter and provided over 15,300 meals. Also, 86% of residents increased or maintained their income during their stay and 91% who exited moved into permanent housing.
Transitional housing - we have three fully furnished apartments that are available for our shelter residents to temporarily rent at a low monthly rate. This allows them additional time to continue working towards increasing their income, build savings for future expenses, and look for and secure permanent housing. During their time with us, we offer transportation assistance, nutritious meals and other basic necessities to the single women and mothers with children whom we serve.
My Sister's resale boutique is more than just a storefront - it's a ministry. Residents of our shelter are able to shop at the boutique for their needs free of charge. This same opportunity is provided to those in need who are working with other human service programs in the community. Shoppers of the boutique are able to purchase gently used clothing, accessories, and household items at a very low and affordable cost, and all proceeds from the boutique financially support the shelter. It also isn't uncommon for personal stories of hardships to be shared with staff and volunteers, which allows for opportunities to offer support and encouragement.
