Program areas at Narrative Magazine
In fy2022, Narrative Magazine had 310,000 dedicated subscribers with special and weekly publication of both well-known and emerging writers. All content, including our digital archive of thousands of stories, poems, essays and art, remained free of charge and accessible to all readers with an email and password sign-in. Narrative published weekly story and poem of the week, held five contests (winter, spring, and fall fiction contests, fourteenth annual poetry contest, and 8th annual high school contest), and published hundreds of artists in 2022.
Continued from part iii, 4bin 2022 we published three digital issues (winter, spring, fall) available on all digital platforms and on kindle. Authors and poets we published include t. c. boyle, ann beattie, bill barich, sarah balakrishnan, timothy leo, cally fiedorek, natalie scenters-zapico, josh haven, katherine heiny, anthony marra, a. d. lauren-abunassar, mary morris, j. p. grasser, david rabe, sandra sidi, and morgan talty. Fiction contest winners included s.l. Wisenberg, tryphena yeboah, janet burroway, andrew steiner, and tiffany isaacs; our fourteenth annual poetry contest winners were kwame dawes, cate lycurgus, and julia anna morrison. Some of the many authors and poets published in the story of the week and poem of the week features were isabelle stillman, ben fergusson, kchi nne nomu, rebecca foust, jacob wrich, julian gewirtz, carolyn murdoch, anna besh, john freeman, jason mcmonagle, and jenny george. Continued from part iii, 4anotably, the Narrative prize, awarded annually for excellent work published by a new or emerging writer in Narrative was presented to sarah balakrishnan, who received the $5,000 prize. Narrative for schools is another way we reach young people. One aspect of that program is our free annual high school writing contest, which reaches hundreds of thousands of students and their teachers across the globe. Entries in 2022 came from seoul to krackow to chicago to palestine, from charter, public and independent schools across the globe. The 2022 year's prompt, "true or false?" Elicited powerful and keenly observed reflections from students about difficult moments that led to an expanded perspective on life. Winners and finalists came from the united states, taipei, lahore (pakistan), england, and british columbia.
