Program areas at NASI
Research - the Academy is a convener of expert scholars (from our membership and beyond) to analyze key policy issues and offer policymakers independent, multi-stakeholder analyses and options. Academy staff analyzes Social Insurance policy issues both as individual scholars and by supporting study panels that analyze information and issue a consensus on policy options. The Academy communicates its work to its members and the interested public through a variety of education forums that the staff or others organize, through website and print information, and through presentations.
Leadership development - the Academy provides opportunities for young people to enter the field of Social Insurance. As the primary organization of Social Insurance professionals, we connect today's leaders with those who will take the reins in coming years. The Academy runs five distinct internship programs that each recruit talented students and young professionals and matches them with internship placements where they begin to make substantive contributions at organizations working to strengthen Social Insurance programs. The Academy also recognizes young scholars for their research and writings on Social Insurance with the annual john heinz dissertation award. There are now nearly 500 associate members of the Academy - young and mid-career professionals who successfully completed one of the Academy's leadership development programs. Past interns and heinz dissertation award winners are now making significant contributions to Social Insurance policy research, advocacy, and implementation.
Membership - the Academy conducts an annual nomination process, holds an annual meeting, maintains an online database and directory of members, and keeps members informed of other opportunities and services available only to Academy members. The Academy holds one annual policy research conference each january that convenes researchers, policymakers, advocates, and other stakeholders on an issue of current importance.
