Program areas at NCTE
Professional meetings and seminars - NCTE produces both in-person and online events to support scholarship in literacy, composition, and language studies. Notably, all professional meetings and seminars moved to virtual models during the pandemic. In this tax period, large meetings returned to in-person models and endured predictable challenges, such as inflation and hybrid experiments, while entering this new era. NCTE also continued offering online programming as part of its repertoire. The largest professional meeting is the NCTE Annual Convention and the second largest is the Conference on College Composition and Communication. All NCTE events were well received and provided beacons of leadership during unprecedented times. Attendance and participation were strong, verifying the important opportunities they provide to teachers and researchers.
Professional journal and periodical publications - The Council continued its rich tradition of publishing original, peer-reviewed research on literacy education and perspectives on current issues in teaching and learning through its periodical publications program. Through ten peer-reviewed journals and one quarterly magazine, NCTE released 48 issues covering a range of critical issues in literacy education from early literacy acquisition practices, through engagement of adolescent literacy learners, to in-depth analyses of public language, literature, and writing. NCTE also transitioned to an online publishing platform for all periodicals in this tax year.
Nonperiodical publications/books - NCTE published or co-published 15 peer-reviewed books this year. The nonperiodical publications program continues to provide an important publishing outlet for NCTE members and the field at large.
Other miscellaneous activities to further the organization's exempt purpose.
