Program areas at NHD

National History Day (NHD) is a highly regarded academic program for elementary and secondary school students. Each year, more than half a million students, encouraged by thousands of teachers nationwide participate in the NHD contest. Students choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libaries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries. These products are entered into competitions in the spring at local, state and national levels.
State program: To assist and develop the program at the state and local levels. This includes conducting conferences and training, on-site visits, workshops, contest attendance and assistance, and some monetary assistance.
Summer Programs: Selected by the Library of Congress to develop several programs including two webinar series. NHD is also collaborating with ten master teachers to develop a teacher guide on using Library of Congress resources to support historical argumentation. In the Sacrifice for Freedom program, 16 student-teacher teams are studying World War II in the Pacific. NHD will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii in December 2021 to complete the program and honor the Silent Heroes the students have selected at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
