Program areas at NPC
In 2023, the National Petroleum Council's (npc) primary activities were associated with three npc studies being conducted in response to requests from the secretary of energy.short-term energy challenges and a manageable energy transition.on july 29, 2022, u.s. secretary of energy granholm formally requested the npc to provide, on an expedited basis, advice addressing the then current energy markets and helping to ensure a manageable transition to a net-zero future. During the fall of 2022, the npc organized study teams, held study group meetings, conducted study analyses, and developed proposed reports on these topics. In december 2022, the npc completed its study and transmitted to the secretary two resulting reports on (1) short-term actions and (2) transition strategies, entitled:- Petroleum market developments progress and actions to increase supply and improve resilience.- principles, and oil & gas industry initiatives and technologies for progressing to net zero.final editing and publication/posting on npc website was completed in the first quarter of 2023.hydrogen energy studyby letter dated november 8, 2021, secretary granholm formally requested the npc to undertake "a study on the deployment of low and zero carbon hydrogen energy at scale through the entire value chain." During 2022, the npc organized study teams, held study group meetings, conducted study analyses, and developed a report outline on this topic. Most of the study group meeting and analyses activities were conducted during 2023, involving approximately 300 participants. Study completion and report approval was set for the end of the first quarter of 2024. Post-approval report outreach/communication activities were planned for the remainder of 2024. Greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions studyby letter dated april 22, 2022, secretary granholm formally requested the npc to undertake "a study that defines pathways and prioritizes options for ghg emissions reduction across the u.s. natural gas value chain." During the remainder of 2022, the npc organized study teams, held study group meetings, conducted study analyses, and developed a report outline on this topic. Most of the study group meeting and analyses activities were conducted during 2023, involving over 200 participants. Study completion and report approval set for year-end 2024. Post-approval report outreach/communication activities were planned for the remainder of 2024.
