The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of south carolina is dedicated to furthering knowledge and appreciation of our colonial/national heritage through historic preservation, patriotic service, and educational projects. The Society collects and preserves manuscripts, traditions, relics and mementos of bygone days, and preserves and restores buildings connected with the early history of our country. Preserving historic treasures, teaching Colonial History of our state & nation,and Patriotism.

Program areas at National Society of the Colonial Dames of America

the nscda-sc owns and operates the powder magazine museum, south carolina's oldest public building. Completed in 1713, it was used for gunpowder storage in the protection of charles town from 1713-1748 and during the american revolution. As one of the few surviving structures of pre-revolutionary south carolina, it was listed as a National historic landmark in september, 1989. In fy 2022-23, the museum welcomed a total of 19,572 visitors including 2,405 students participating in educational field trips. In the spring and fall, the museum offered two zoom lecture series on the 18th century Colonial experience. the museum also partners with other nonprofits, k-12 educators, colleges, and universities on projects and activities that achieve both historic preservation and education.
the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of south carolina is dedicated to the furthering of knowledge and appreciation for colonial/national heritage. the organization provides annual contributions to historic properties (dumbarton, gunston hall, sulgrave manor) owned or supported by our National organization ($3,450) and to sc exempt organizations whose missions align with our Society's mission ($2,300). We honor our program speakers with small contributions to exempt organizations connected to their topic (1,350). A special contribution was made this year to our National organization towards the publishing of a book featuring our "great american treasures". the book will be our National Society's gift to America in celebration of her 250th anniversary. ($40,267).
the nscda-sc annually provides many educational scholarships and awards related to Colonial history and education. In the current year, 4 "teaching of history" scholarships were awarded to college students majoring in history, 1 congressional essay contest winner scholarship was awarded for a high school student to attend a workshop in Washington, dc, a summer internship was funded for a student at the powder magazine, and several awards were given for veteran's programs in sc and for state and regional history related programs. On the National level, the Society contributed to an american indian medical scholarship for a student in the medical field.
