Program areas at New Mexico In Depth
Public Health Reporting In 2023, we reported regularly on the response of state leaders to a crises of alcohol related deaths in New Mexico, following our 2022 seven part investigative series of alcohol's harm to New Mexico. New Mexico In Depth also focused on the disturbing lack of health care coverage in the state's rural areas and the crisis in nursing home staffing around the state.
Indigenous Affairs and Education In a series of stories in 2023 New Mexico In Depth exposed the rift between how powerful public officials talk about addressing a crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and relatives (MMIWR) in the state whose actions failed to live up to their words. We also produced additional reporting on the issue of Indigenous students being expelled far more than any other group, with one school district responsible - Gallup-McKinley School District.
Good Government Reporting New Mexico in Depth reported on the money going to state lawmakers on key issues such as an effort to reform the state's alcohol policies, including contributions from lobbyists and their employers. We continued to report on the state's independent ethics commission and the progress it has made in creating a new culture of disclosure among the state's public officials. In addition, we hosted an event with the executive director of the Ethics Commision at the University of New Mexico. And we launched a new project that will result in a new interactive money-in-politics web portal in 2024.
