Program areas at New Plaza Cinema
In January 2020, the part-time cinema we had been using was totally destroyed by a flood and remains unrepaired. As COVID-19 surfaced, we commenced a virtual cinema presence which is continuing. New Plaza Cinema created a virtual program offering current films, lectures and talk-back events to the public on Zoom, most of which were not available to the public during COVID-19 and all of which provided the public with an opportunity to learn about challenging socially-relevant subject matter. More than 9,000 people attended these screenings and special events through the present. These programs, some offered for free and many of which included a Zoom Q&A, attracted diverse members of the public in New York City and throughout the United States and worldwide, to learn about and explore the art of independent film, including foreign and documentary film, and to engage with the challenging, socially relevant subject matter of such films. Approximately a range of 150 - 600 people attended the Zoom lectures and talkbacks. In addition, we were able to rent a 72-seat off-Broadway theater from early February to late June 2022 and constructed a screen there, showing films every Thursday through Sunday. We began successfully showing films under a one-year license agreement on September 30, 2022. In September 2023, prior to the end of the license agreement, we entered into another one-year license agreement which authorizes New Plaza Cinema to continue to show weekend films virtually every week through the end of September 2024.
