Program areas at New York Theatre Barn Incorporated
Our four innovative core programming platforms allow us to incubate original musicals in front of live audiences. This enables writers, directors, choreographers, and producers to experiment and develop each culture-shifting story through a unique incubatory process. Our core programs include: * the 17th season of our award-winning New Works Series - pre-premieres of original musicals presented to a live and virtual audience, and the series is the impetus for our podcast from Broadway Podcast Network, The Musicals of Tomorrow * the 11th season of our Choreography Lab - the only platform where choreographers and writers collaborate on movement for new musicals during incubation and often putting new musicals on their feet for the first time * unique Residency opportunities which result in readings, workshops, inventive developmental productions, and a new summer residency on Fire Island called Barn on Fire for three musicals in development (a collaboration with the Fire Island Pines Arts Project) launching in the summer of 2022 * Theatre Barn Records - an imprint of Broadway Records and dedicated to making musical theatre development the most accessible that it's ever been both for artists and audiences New York Theatre Barn has continued to support artists during the pandemic through virtual and live presentations. Since March of 2020, we have presented the development of 96 original musicals written by 181 writers while making space for over 800 Artists. We evolved our award-winning New Works Series and Choreography Lab to present virtual, hybrid presentations. We also launched Theatre Barn Records (an imprint of Broadway Records), a podcast from Broadway Podcast Network (The Musicals of Tomorrow). In October 2021, we hosted a week-long residency for SueƱos: Our American Musical at Theaterlab in Manhattan. We have amassed a catalog of over 1,150 videos and over one million views on our YouTube Channel. Our live virtual programming allows us to reach a diverse global audience to observe the development of meaningful, original culture-shifting musicals. Over the past year, we've welcomed a new Marketing Director, presented a panel on Latinx Theatre Creators, a panel on Women in the Theatre (as part of our A Seat at the Table roundtable series), celebrated Black History Month with the release of the concept album Freedom Riders: The Civil Rights Musicals released the concept album Seasons: A New Musical Song Cycle in collaboration with Broadway Records, and returned to live in-person programming with our award-winning New Works Series. For artists: the support of New York Theatre Barn means investment in the process. We give artists time, space, support, and the freedom to create their way. We offer a glimpse inside the blueprint of an original musical developed in real-time for audiences. We are the ONLY theatre company that: * has a record imprint of a major record label with a focus on making musical theatre development the most accessible that it's ever been * has an exploratory platform for writers and choreographers to develop movement for original musicals during incubation, providing emerging choreographers with space and mentorship to create new musicals in the beginning stages of development * provides pre-premieres of new musicals from a spectrum of diverse musical theatre writers in Off-Broadway venues and to thousands of viewers through live-streaming around the globe * is dedicated to including ASL interpreters for all live performances, among other disability inclusion practices. For our 16th season in 2023, we supported 98 Artists, 30 Writers, 22 Original Musicals, 21 Administrators, 6 Choreographers, 3 Concept Albums, and a Global Audience.
