Program areas at Newgen Peacebuilders
Raising south sudan (rss) this program, which has been in place for 12 years, continued support for education in ruweng state and jonglei state, two economically challenged areas of south sudan, one of the world's most fragile countries due to past civil wars. Focal activities included initiating the rehabilitation of multi-classroom buildings, roofs, and wells at primary schools serving a combined 1,500 teachers and students. The program continued expansion of scholarships to send graduating primary school students to boarding high schools in the capital city of juba and rumbek state. (continued on schedule o)these scholarship efforts resulted in the first cohort of students to complete high school, participate in follow-on teacher training, and return to their home villages as teaching assistants. Intensive english as a second language training and resources for teachers and students was added, and an initiative to begin training parents and community members to one day sustainably manage schools was begun.
Mentoring mwiko/pivot academy (mm/pa)one of the foundational mac programs reached a new level of expansion and sustainability as a result of collaborative activities with educational institutions including the college of engineering at north carolina state university. Activities included stem and english as a second language (esl) programs at 7 primary schools feeding secondary schools (high schools) in the northern rural burera district, as well as scholarships for students to attend university in the capital city of kigali. (continued on schedule o)overall, evidence-based evaluations demonstrated that this intensive focus on improved learning methods has significantly increased the number of students - both young men and women - qualifying for competitive government scholarships.
Newgen Peacebuilders (ngp) this flagship program and organization conducting nonprofit business under the Mothering Across Continents umbrella continued its 10-year expansion of peace education, training, and mentoring for young people ages 14 to 29. This program passed an important milestone, having officially certified 10,000 young Peacebuilders in the us and countries including argentina, lebanon, south sudan, and the philippines. The executive director and program were recognized with a national award for excellence in conflict resolution and peacebuilding. (continued on schedule o)the year's activities included continued expansions in utilization of an online learning platform, content, and experiences known as youth & peace in action (ypa) powered by ngp, accessible to 250,000 users.
