Program areas at Newton Community Farm

Farming and produce. Newton Community Farm continued to model sustainable agriculture on the historic angino Farm site in 2023, providing fresh produce to the Community via Community supported agriculture shares, on-site Farm stand and local farmers market produce sales and donating fresh produce to local food pantries valued at $16,000 (included in above revenue and Newton Community Farm
Farmstead preservation and improvement projects. During 2023, a new greenhouse was dedicated and put in service. The greenhouse was funded in large part by a donation from the family of a long-time Farm supporter. The associated cost to construct the greenhouse was capitalized.also during 2023 Newton Community Farm participated in a grant application to the Massachusetts department of agricultural resources (mdar) submitted by the city of Newton (the owner of the property on which the Farm operates) to install solar panels on the barn. The solar installation serves the Farm's environmental stewardship and education mission by modeling sustainable energy production. The Farm provided staff support for the application process and for the installation of the panels.a dedication ceremony for both the new greenhouse and the solar panels was held in spring 2023 which provided an opportunity to welcome the Community to the Farm, honor the greenhouse donors, and thank the city and mdar for collaborating on the solar panel project. The nominal costs for the ceremony and gathering are included in the expenses total at 4a above.
Education programs and events. During 2023 Newton Community Farm presented children's education programs in small group formats both at the Farm and off site. In addition, an educational sign providing historical information about the Farm was installed, a talk about the sustainable of the earth's food supply was presented, and the Farm's summer high school intern program, providing high-school youth with hands-on farming experience along with discussion based learning.
