Program areas at North Carolina Community Health Worker Association
Training: we offer Community Health Worker training "scct" standardized core competency training through 13 Community colleges across the state of North Carolina. This was developed by 2 chws who are now master trainers of the curriculum/course. This is a 96 hour course that can be taken virtually or in person. The course is also offered in both english and spanish.
Workforce advancement: we hold regional listening sessions for each of our 6 regions, in order for chws to provide information about the needs in their communities. We also hold bi-monthyly roundtables , providing a safe space for chws across the state to share their experiences and discuss successes and challenges in a peer-learning environment. Chws can draw on their experiences to learn with each other about enablers of success, barriers or roadblocks faced in their day-to-day work, and areas to incorporate feedback.
Certification: we have certified over 750 Community Health workers in the state of nc. The nc chw certification process is led by ncchwa with supporting partners including ncdhhs office or rural Health (orh), nc ccs, unc-pembroke, Community healing through activism and strategic mobilization (chasm), and partners in Health (pih) and is rooted in chws and informed by listening sessions with them. Chw certification is cross walked with the c3 project roles and the socioecological model (sem) and provides a credential to support the training and lived experience of chws and facilitate employment. There are two certification tracks: 1) scct completion and 2) legacy track. Advanced levels of certification are in development.
