Program areas at American Chemical Society - Northeastern Section
Meetings & Symposia: In addition to the 9 regular monthly meetings of the Section a large number of symposia continuing education and special topics meetings are sponsored by the Section. These include an exchange program with the German Chemical Society which alternates between the US and Germany in bringing students together to share their research projects; an active Younger Chemists Committee sponsors an annual career symposium and a research conference attended by students from around New England; several symposia for scientists from biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries in the area; and meetings during Earth Day and National Chemistry Week which encourage the public to view chemical demonstrations and involve students in exploring chemical phenomena. Special regional meetings are used to reach portions of the membership that are outside of the immediate Boston area.
Publications: The Section publishes The Nucleus 9 times per year with an electronic circulation of approximately 4600 of the Northeastern Section's members in eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The Nucleus has been recognized as one of best publications by a local Section of the ACS. The Board of Publications is also responsible for the design and maintenance of the Section's web site at www.nesacs.org and implements procedures for web streaming of many Section meetings.
Awards program: The Section's awards program includes the recognition of students at every grade level from primary school through graduate school. High school college and university teachers are recognized for outstanding teaching abilities and long service as presented in nominations for the awards. Section members are recognized for service to the Section and to the National American Chemical Society. Outstanding chemists are recognized for achievements in research and in promoting the benefits of chemistry to society at large. The Section sponsors students in the ACS Project SEED activities to involve economically disadvantaged high school students in college and university research supports the ACS Scholars Program for college students and recognizes excellence in undergraduate and graduate student research presentations.
