Program areas at Northern VT Area Health Education Center
Health Careers Exploration Programs - Encourage and guide youth and adults to enter a health profession. We do this in three ways: 1) by promoting the many benefits and options of a career in health care; 2) by preparing program participants with knowledge about career and college pathways; and 3) teaching health and science related skills. Programs are provided in school-based and residential settings and online platforms.
Quality Improvement and Continuing Education - provides health professionals and decision makers with relevant and timely information and education to improve systems of care and patient outcomes. We do this by providing high quality, affordable continuing education programs, conferences and networking events both independently and in collaboration with other partners.
Recruitment & Retention - Northern Vermont AHEC works to attract and retain adequate numbers of well-trained professionals to the health care workforce in our region. We do this in three ways: 1) by participating in education loan repayment programs for health professionals. We have also been a participant in the SLRP federal ELR program for several years, and legislative appropriations are earmarked for LDAC's, which may be a separate program as well; 2) by supporting community-based and clinical educational experiences for health and allied health careers students in our region that demonstrate the value and benefits of rural practice and lifestyle; and 3) by conducting an annual survey of practitioners to determine primary care workforce shortages and continuing educational needs.
