Program areas at Nursing Heart
Global health program - the global health program recruits and hosts nurses and Nursing students in their travel to guatemala to coordinate clinics for underserved guatemalan communities with which Nursing Heart has long partnered to improve health outcomes. Nursing Heart facilitates general medicine clinics, cervical cancer clinics, school wellness clinics and foot clinics for elderly and disabled patients in areas where access to basic, preventative healthcare services are severely limited by geographic, economic, cultural, gender and political factors. These clinical activities not only serve to support the health of vulnerable guatemalan families, but also to train nurses from the united states to meet global health challenges by exposing them to different cultural practices around and social determinants of health.
Pacoxpon water project - the pacoxpon water project entailed the remodeling and new construction of water and sanitation infrastructure in the remote, rural community of pacoxpon. New toilets and handwashing stations were installed in the preschool facility to replace unsanitary latrines and unsafe washing areas for both students and teachers. The primary school received repairs to the underground cistern that was leaking, which resulted in uncaptured rainwater leaking into the yard and creating hazardous conditions (dengue, zika) instead of being channelled into the facility's bathrooms. Because both facilities serve as community gathering spaces, the entire village of 100+ families have benefited from this project.
Community health worker - the community health worker (chw) program trains volunteers who are native to and residents of marginalized guatemalan communities where access to healthcare services is very low and where health education and prevention are critical challenges. 14 individuals participated in the chw program in fy 22-23, and collectively they conducted over 500 home visits to detect and educate people on chronic disease management including high rates of diabetes and hypertension, as well as mental and maternal health needs.
