Program areas at Nuway Recovery Foundation
The Nuway Recovery Foundation forges and maintains relationships with mission-oriented, quality-focused Recovery residence operators. In addition to identifying new Recovery residences able to serve clients in need, the organization also communicates with residence operators and Recovery tenants to ensure adherence to the quality standards the Foundation upholds. By doing so, the Nuway Recovery Foundation incentivizes improved housing quality and services for people seeking Recovery. The Nuway Recovery Foundation provides housing support and related services to persons in early Recovery from substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders and (continued on schedule o)support to other organizations seeking to enhance Recovery capital at the community level. In 2022, the Nuway Recovery Foundation helped an average of 811 people per month access quality Recovery housing.housing security is central to Nuway's mission and legacy. Nuway was started by members of the minneapolis alano society, who realized that having a safe and supportive place to live was essential to establishing lasting Recovery. Nuway founders created one of the nation's first halfway houses - a model of secure, supervised housing and peer support where people in Recovery could live while receiving treatment or engaging in twelve step work and while in early Recovery. Nuway Recovery Foundation also funds Recovery housing for treatment clients unable to pay for this vital service. These persons have low Recovery capital and lack the financial means to pay for the Recovery housing that can help them manage the disease of addiction and its effects and regain health and productivity. In 2022, the Nuway Recovery Foundation paid more than five million dollars to Recovery residences to cover the cost of services for persons utilizing Recovery housing while receiving treatment. Homelessness and housing insecurity significantly reduce the chances of treatment engagement and sustainable Recovery and expose individuals to increased risks of poor health, trauma, hunger, poverty, and incarceration. The organization provides ongoing education, communication, and support that helps Recovery residences provide a safe, peer-led, non-clinical, recovery-focused environment that contributes to better treatment engagement and compliance to build a strong Foundation in Recovery during and after treatment. The work of the Nuway Recovery Foundation is changing the face of Minnesota's Recovery housing marketplace. The Nuway Recovery Foundation has a meaningful positive influence among Recovery housing operators. The organization uses its voice to encourage providers to adhere to quality practices. The Nuway Recovery Foundation has stimulated the growth of existing Recovery residence operators and the start of new ones. The searchable Nuway Recovery Foundation Recovery housing directory housed on the nuway.org website has become one of the state's most prominent resources for finding Recovery housing providers.the Nuway Recovery Foundation also plays a key role in one of the largest studies ever conducted into the effects of Recovery residence access on addiction treatment outcomes. In 2019, Nuway and the university of Minnesota's center for practice transformation initiated a landmark study to determine the effects of recovery-supportive housing on the outcomes of people receiving addiction treatment. While recovery-supportive housing has long been viewed as a major contributor to successful treatment outcomes, few studies and reliable data exist to inform and improve the availability and operation of Recovery residences. This longitudinal research, which aligns with Nuway's ongoing mission of Recovery in supportive environments, is designed to quantify Recovery housing effects on clinical outcomes and personal Recovery capital. As a regional behavioral healthcare organization, Nuway has increased access to data that helps understand the impacts of Recovery housing on treatment. The number of Nuway clients voluntarily participating in this study - more than 5,500 - makes it the largest of its kind, and the findings to date yield a high rate of statistical reliability. In 2022, more Nuway clients volunteered to participate in this study, which generates vital data to help Recovery residence operators, researchers, treatment providers, insurance companies, and policymakers nationwide. Nuway Recovery Foundation supports this study by facilitating communication between study volunteers, Recovery residence operators, and assisting with data collection.
