Program areas at NXTHVN
In may, 2023, the fourth cohort of NXTHVN fellows completed their fellowships, which began in august, 2022. Cohort 04 studio fellows engaged in a comprehensive year-long fellowship designed to accelerate their career by providing dedicated studio space, stipend funding, rigorous professional learning sessions, and an expanded network of collectors, galleries, and institutions. Throughout the year, studio fellows participated in workshops and seminars that focused on practical components of setting up and managing a sustainable art practice. The studio fellow experience culminated with an acclaimed group exhibition at the sean kelly gallery in new york city in june of 2023.curatorial fellows received co-working space and a stipend throughout the fellowship year. In addition to co-curating an exhibition, the curatorial fellows developed advanced skills in the logistics and concepts of exhibition-making, enhanced professional development and mentorship skills. Curatorial fellows conducted research and worked closely with the programs and exhibitions staff and engaged in a series of group critiques, studio visits, and workshops with art world professionals and produced an exhibition at NXTHVN in march of 2023.in august, 2023, the fifth cohort of fellows began their fellowship experience, engaging in the same level of programming as the previous cohort. This group consisted of seven studio fellows and two curatorial fellows.during the year, NXTHVN produced world-class exhibitions including:september-november 2022: the truth is i am you. This participatory installation invites the audience to complete the prompt "the truth is" on large balloons that float throughout the gallery space. The personal truths written on the balloons will become part of the collective experience of the exhibition, with messages added throughout the life of the installation. As a compliment to the balloon installation, a video of "truth is'' messages gathered from the public by the truth bootha touring, inflatable booth developed by the cause collective that traveled around the worldis on view. A vibrant speech bubble bench titled, josephine and kazumi (real red), is installed at NXTHVN's facade, inviting visitors to rest, contemplate and reflect. The exhibition was organized by kalia brooks, NXTHVN's director of programs and exhibitions.march-may, 2023: not for sale a tribute to black and brown communities, not for sale explores the relationship between culture, consumerism, and community and how these connections inform which objects and materials are collectively held as valuable. This exhibition celebrates the shared realities, and high cultural-value found in black and brown communities through familiar street and domestic objects, sounds, and images while emphasizing that inherent ways of being, energy and culture are not for sale. Curated by NXTHVN curatorial fellows, cornelia stokes and kiara cristina ventura june 2023: common practice, this group exhibition is the first part of common practice's summer 2023 project slate. The exhibition examines the role and importance of "the park" in the formations of communities. Contributing artists utilize photography, photo collage, and film to explore the impact of basketball as a cultural medium and its capacity for community building. Common practice: public access features work from anwulika anigbo, jeanne moutoussamy-ashe, kevin couliau, sue kwon, hope mora, daniel ramos, robin rhode, tschabalala self, paul anthony smith, ashley tillery, shan wallace and kim weston.in may of 2023, NXTHVN announced its fifth cohort of fellows, including seven studio fellows and two curatorial fellows, selected from over 825 international applicants.through NXTHVN's creative youth development initiative, the apprenticeship program, all fellows engaged in inter-generational mentorship with nine local high school students. All graduating apprentices went on to four-year universities.
