Oakland Literacy Council

Provide free individualized math, reading, writing, conversational english, and digital Literacy tutoring to adults who live, work, or go to school in Oakland county, Michigan who have reading or math skills less than the ninth-grade level or limited english skills. The core olc model is different from traditional adult education classroom models. It is a flexible, effective, and low-cost intervention that relies on trained volunteer tutors to provide instruction. Olc's program is relationship-driven and built around trust. Instruction is strengthened and learning is accelerated with online self-study, small group learning, and specialized curriculums. Each week, over 200 learners build their skills in a safe, supportive environment where they earn job promotions, become citizens, take part in their children's education, and navigate the world better- all because of a tutor who built an educational and caring relationship with them that allowed them to thrive.
