Program areas at Oceans Initiative
Killer whale conservation - Oceans Initiative has research projects on all three threats to the endangered southern resident killer whales - not enough salmon, too much noise, and contaminants. We conduct a land-based survey to assess the impact of vessel and acoustic mitigation measures.
Conservation tools - Oceans Initiative develops and applies low-cost, open-source tools that can be used to assess marine biodiversity and mitigate human impacts on wildlife and habitats. These tools and approaches refer to the suite of hardware, software, technology, and approaches we use to measure ocean noise levels, estimate abundance and distribution, identify and manage marine protected areas, or measure and mitigate bycatch of marine wildlife in fishing gear.
Sound ocean - Oceans Initiative studies the impacts of in-air and underwater noise on fish, seabirds and marine mammals. We also engage the community as "citizen scientists" to help us collect data so we can measure ocean noise levels.
