Program areas at Oconee Humane Society
Animal welfare program-oconee Humane Society staff and volunteers work tirelessly to get an average of 2,000 abandoned dogs and cats out of the County animal shelter and into loving homes. Knowing that every life is worth saving, we dedicate our time to treating, nurturing, training and marketing and matching dogs and cats with people and homes where they can flourish.thanks to generous grants and donations, sick or injured pets are receiving vital medical care at our pet clinic. From simple respiratory infections to leg amputations, ohs is a lifeline for these innocent souls. From treatment to foster care to adoption, lives are saved every day. In addition to local area adoptions, we have an active pet transport program where we work with pre-vetted rescue groups to find additional adoption opportunities in regions with less pet overpopulation. The Oconee humand Society received in-kind veterianary services of $45,810 that are not included above.
Spay-neuter program-oconee Humane Society staff pioneered a low-cost spay/neuter program available to every County resident to help combat pet overpopulation. Coordinating with local veterinarians we are able to offer vouchers to the public for dog or cat spay/neuter surgery at about half the regular price. Additionally, when donations allow we offer deeper discounted vouchers to widen our reach across socio-economic classes.to further our progress in this area, we opened a spay/neuter clinic on the site of the current County shelter. This provides another avenue for financially-challenged residents to be part of the solution to our pet-overpopulation problem.
Community outreach program-we know the best option for any pet is to remain in a loving, caring home. Increasing animal welfare across our County ultimately reduces shelter intake. From providing pet food to those in need, individually or through food bank partnerships, to hosting free vaccination and micrchip clinics, our goal is to improve the lives of pets with these services. We are also dedicated to expanding pet care knowledge throughout our community with Humane education programs in schools, organizations and events.
