Program areas at Olamau Foundation
The Olamau race - the Foundation conducts the Olamau race, an ultimate unlimited outrigger canoe challenge in Hawaii (the "race"). The race is a 90 mile open ocean race that takes place over three consecutive days. Compared to other marathon canoe races, the race is among the longer races designed to attract the top competitors in canoe racing. In its inaugural year, race competitors included teams from Hawaii, southern California, the pacific northwest, two international teams from tahiti. For 2018, there was not a race but the organization is providing training to canoe racers.
Education and cultural heritage - the Foundation also promotes, encourages participation in, and provides education and instruction in Hawaiian and polynesian culture through canoeing and other related activities. For example, the Foundation maintains and perpetuates authentic Hawaiian canoe racing and preservation of Hawaiian canoes. The Foundation provides educational materials and discussion of the heritage and contributions of canoe racing to the Hawaiian culture.
