Program areas at One World Now
Oneworld Now! Offers after-school World language classes and leadership training workshops for high school youth. The program partners with public schools and is certified to offer credit, helping students to meet graduation requirements. Oneworld Now! Focuses on students furthest from educational justice due to income, race, or amount of time in the u.s. with sliding scale tuition and individualized supports for student success. In 2022-23, oneworld now!s after-school program served 220 students in seattle public schools and online across the u.s.. Language classes are twice weekly during after-school hours. Languages taught include modern standard arabic, mandarin chinese, korean, and russian. The leadership workshops are held bi-weekly and focus on global leadership skills development and intercultural communication.
Annually, oneworld Now! Awards scholarship-based study abroad opportunities to its students. Through the study abroad program, students embark on a life-changing journey to develop intercultural leadership skills, practice language skills, and experience immersion learning on a chaperoned learning experience abroad. During the 2022 fiscal year, oneworld Now! Supported 13 students in applying for and meeting costs of joining into programs with 3 partner agencies: ciee, student diplomacy corps, and nsli-y. In addition, we also organized our own study abroad program, bringing 10 students to morocco during ramadan for home-stays and cultural experiences, in this program, too, oneworld Now! Prioritizes students historically underrepresented in study abroad learning. We offer needs-based scholarships of as much as 85%, depending on the family situation. In most cases, the student would not have the opportunity to study abroad or fulfill their desire for international education.
Oneworld Now! Offers summer language and leadership camps in seattle, wa. During the 2022 fiscal year, the camp ran for three weeks from 9 am to 4 pm, and offered modern standard arabic, korean, and mandarin chinese. Students earned 1 year of language credit. The camp focused on fostering language acquisition, intercultural understanding, and a desire for international travel. During the camp, students learned basic writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills in classes using immersion methodology. The camp also introduced students to practices and perspectives of the culture they studied, as well as the leadership skills that will enable them to grow as youth leaders with a global perspective. Students learned through classroom activities, guest speakers, cultural activities, and international meals. The students served were of the same demographics as those in 4a above.
