Prevention, mediation and crisis intervention are used to curb gang violence and cool tense situations. Open Door engages in crisis intervenuon and facilitates negotiations between opposing gangs. thus preventing bloodshed. Prevention is also a partof Open Door's work with active gang members through seminars with parents as well as working with former gang members released from prison, coaching them to stay away from them former gang affiliations and make other choices in life. This effort was in £eoperation with the CO Dept of Corrections (“CDOC") and a joint agreement with the City & County of Denver (“CCDenver"). The ©CDenver arrangement was significantly reduced im 2017 from 2016, resulting in one FTE 1n 2017 compared to five in 2016. Further in 2018 the one FTE resigned effective July 31, 2018, and accordingly both the revenue and expenses related to this program are Significantly reduced in the 2nd half of 2018 compared to 2017, at least until a reptacement can be idenufied. In addition, the contract with CDOC was not renewed in 2018 when the CDOC decided to move the program for former gang members to inside the prison priot fo the release of the prisoners. Open Door continued the program informaily in 2018 (with no support from the CDOC) and is re evaluating its ability to continue the program with No fund b (Code: ssid (Expenses$sinciuding grantsof$ dd (Revenue Support services are used both individually and in groups in order to divert youth trom street gangs. Open Door has developed on-going counseling programs for those youth and adufts who attempt to resist joining or win to ieave gangs. Counselingis also provided to victums of gang crime, families, friends and relatives of those hurt, killed or imprisoned. Support services include alternative activities for gang members and other at-risk youth
Community education is provided through speaking engagements to civic organizations, churches, schools and businesses. Open Boor provides educational information for the general public, making on average two presentations a week. The purpose of this Program is to increase awareness of gang activity and solicit assistance in prevention. Presentations made to schools and other youth groups are designed to reduce gang recruitment activities. Former gang members volunteer their time to participate in these Prevention acuvities. One of the goals of this program is to give younger children the information and tools they need to resist the pressures to join gangs or participate in drug-related actwities
