Program areas at Open Research Institute

The largest program expense was Remote Labs Training and Project Support $27,669.18 Remote Labs are engineering lab benches with test equipment and development hardware. These lab benches are accessible from the Internet 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Remote Labs are the hub of work for multiple Open Source projects such as Haifuraiya Opulent Voice and Neptune. Opulent Voice and Neptune required additional equipment for their use cases. Remote Labs provided a week-long MATLAB Simulink training session for 15 people. Remote Labs provided FPGA training for 5 people. All Remote Labs projects are Open Source. Published work directly benefits the Amateur Radio and Amateur Radio Satellite ITU radio services. The mission of Remote Labs is to enable personal and professional development for people with a technical vocation. Remote Lab Services are provided at no cost to the individual and have resulted in a substantial amount of published code and peer-reviewed articles.
The third largest program expense was Workforce Development $1,670.63. ORI participated in and presented at multiple workforce development conferences throughout the year about how to use Open Source project work as a viable path for professional development in digital hardware and software fields.
The second largest program expense was RFBitBanger $16,243.67 RFBitBanger is a low-power high-frequency digital radio by Dr. Daniel Marks KW4TI. The design is Open Source. It is resilient and easy to maintain because it uses common and easily accessible parts. Participants learned supply chain resiliency and how to design high tech Class E amplifiers with low-tech limitations. This radio implements a novel digital keyboard mode called SCAMP. Two phases of the radio were developed in 2023 with participants in Europe North America and Asia benefiting from the experience.
