Conservation communities: osi supports grassroots organizations and promotes the development of young environmental leaders to broaden representation within the field of conservation. Its citizen action initiative supports newly formed local environmental and urban park groups. The malcolm gordon charitable fund awards grants to nonprofits in urban hudson valley communities, while the geographic and mission aligned barnabas mchenry hudson river valley awards provide grants to students who are actively working to improve their local communities. Likewise, osi's conservation diversity fellowship promotes greater diversity within the environmental field by providing recent students salaried, two-year fellowships at osi to launch their careers.
Osi saves land to protect water sources; create and make parks more welcoming; fight climate change; provide wildlife habitat; and strengthen communities through its supporting organization, the Open Space Institute land trust (osilt). Working across the eastern seaboard, osilt achieves these goals through facilitated largescale conservation projects; direct acquisition and conservation easements; grants and loans aimed at protecting water quality, habitat, and lands that safeguard wildlife and communities in a changing climate. In 2023, osilt protected 15,000 acres with a fair value of $141 million and made 22 capital grants totaling $2.7 million, protecting 14,300 acres in five states with a fair value of $20 million. Further, osi directly approved 14 grants for conservationplanning totaling $230,000.
